I'm delighted to begin a curatorial internship this year at the Museum of Arts & Design. In working with the curator of contemporary jewelry I'll be conducting research on the elusive topic of hip hop jewelry! in preparation for an upcoming exhibition on the topic at the museum, just in time for the completion of my masters thesis on hip hop lyrics and fashion (working title: B-Boys and Fly Girls: Lyrical and Sartorial Style in Hip Hop, 1979-1989).
An American import originally hailing from London, England, Slick Rick, also known as "Slick Rick the Ruler" was well known in the world of 1980s hip hop for his elaborately accessorized appearance; a look so heavily ornamented, it recalled the majestic decoration of 15th and 16th century European monarchs and the powerful presence of bejeweled African kings.
